The Genuis Street Photography of Walter Rothwell’s Exit Left

The Genuis Street Photography of Walter Rothwell’s Exit Left

It’s rare in street photography to come across easily reproducible lighting scenarios, but that is exactly what photographer Walter Rothwell has done with his Exit Left project since 2007. Each year Mr. Rothwell makes his way to a local train station, where back in 2007 he was initially drawn to a particularly strong patch of light he discovered reoccurs pretty regularly around the same time every year.

Canon’s RF45mm F1.2 STM helps photographers avoid some of that purchase anxiety, promising photographers a super-fast F1.2 maximum aperture prime for under $500. After spending a month with this lens, did I find that it delivered the goods or left me wishing I’d spent my money on a more “professional” lens?

The One Thing Every New Street Photographer Needs

The One Thing Every New Street Photographer Needs

by Chris Gampat

Fact: No photographer wakes up one day, figures out exactly what kind of style they want to shoot and makes their impression on it. Instead, they go out and shoot every second that they possibly can--which results in a never-ending experimental approach of finding something that works for someone as an artist.

Your Billingham Canvas Bag Just Became More Valuable

Your Billingham Canvas Bag Just Became More Valuable

On March 5th, Billingham sent the Phoblographer a press release detailing the new color combination: Navy FibreNyte / Chocolate Leather. Confused by this, I asked for more clarification. You see, the Phoblographer has been really picky about the camera bags we've reviewed over the years after a while of just reviewing everything offered. And for the life of me, I really always thought that everything Billingham made was cotton canvas. However, it was only more recently that I realized that that wasn't the case. Instead, FibreNyte feels a lot like canvas. So this got me thinking.

Canon's mirrorless cameras have been gradually achieving the fame they deserve. However, their lenses are not too far behind. The company has introduced some exceptional models over the years, but the portfolio is not yet complete. It appears to fill the gap; the company is researching newer focal ranges, and this time, it includes a look at broadening the wide-angle range.

Is Low Contrast Black and White the Best Way to Shoot?

Shooting your black and white portraits in harsh contrasty light may seem like the smart thing to do if you are looking for a darker, higher contrast look - and while this may be true if you are trying to nail the look in camera, the reality is that you actually want to avoid that super harsh, contrasty light if you plan on processing your images after capture.

The Sony Lens that Failed. And Why No One Talks About It

The Sony Lens that Failed. And Why No One Talks About It

There have been instances where one wonders—Will lens makers introduce optics that offer some character? While most lenses today offer stereotypical, clinically sharp images (much of which is a result of such demands), some groups want lenses to add flare when shooting against the sun. Sony lenses are often known to adhere to the former, but there was a time when they came close to creating a perfect optical system that offered character, but it failed.

Flic Film Chrome 100 Review: The Film Emulsion No One Told You About

Maybe it's because I haven't made images with Ektachrome since I reviewed it back in 2018 and even then I've got the memories of how it was back in 2012 -- but this is a story about a rare time that I've been completely fooled. The other day, Gear Editor Feroz Khan and I were on our Thursday call. He asked about why no one else makes positive/chrome film. That eventually lead me to Blue Moon Camera's website. And there, I found Flic Film Chrome 100. It's a film emulsion that is spooled by a company in Alberta, Canada. Their website states that it's respooled Ektachrome 100. In fact, I made photographs with both it and Kodacolor 100 and the images looked so similar.

This is Canon’s Most Slept on Lens

Canon has been one of the few companies to continue pushing the boundaries of its optical system. With the EF mount, the company introduced models such as 200mm f2, 24-70mm f2.8L, and 50mm f1.8 STM lenses. However, with the RF, the list is small but continuously growing. And one lens that managed to win us over but is continuously ignored, is the Canon RF 100mm f2.8 Macro.
