Harlowe Hybrid Pocket Flash GN12 Review: The Most Innovative Flash in Years

Harlowe Hybrid Pocket Flash GN12 Review: The Most Innovative Flash in Years

by Chris Gampat

I've known that Harlowe was working on a flash for many years. The company, known for their gorgeous LED lights, realized a while ago that sometimes LEDs can't do everything. So they started building a flash. With that said, I truly hope that the Harlowe Hybrid Pocket Flash isn't the only one that they'll build. This little thing is designed for street photographers and others. But I'll be really honest here: it's weak. And if that's what you're looking for, then this could work well. Aside from that, this is also the single most innovative flash that I've used in several years. If Harlowe makes a far more powerful and professional version, I truly might just give up my Profoto lights -- and I don't say that lightly.

Canon has some of the best lenses in its portfolio. The company has a series that can work across various genres: from weddings to stars to people to insects. Canon, as a manufacturer, has been keen to develop its existing technologies, which include sensors and optics. As part of the latest development, the brand seems to be working on a new macro lens for young photographers. Have a look.

Viltrox has been one of the third-party lens makers that have made things better for young photographers. The company has designed some wonderful focal ranges, some of which work wonderfully with Nikon cameras. However, it appears that amidst the Viltrox-Nikon lawsuit that we reported earlier, the company is now reportedly working on a new patent. Have a look.

The Toughest Leather Camera Strap I’ve Ever Used

The Toughest Leather Camera Strap I’ve Ever Used

Something that I've been wanting more and more of as I end my late 30s are products that last the rest of my life. The more I think about it, if I had kids, there are very few things that I could potentially pass onto them. That's because the world has been made more about disposable, cheaper, products that somehow or another end up in a landfill. But a while back, a friend in her late 50s gifted me her father's Nikon F2 camera. And for that, I paired it with the Bowman Leather Vantage strap. It's crazy to think that even if I had kids today, that F2 would be able to be passed down to my kids. After two years of using the Vantage strap, I'm still really shocked at how well it's held up.

If you thought about where to get your prints done cheaply, then you're probably considering places like Costco, Walgreens, or other pharmacy-style places. They take a while, and the quality that you're getting is of a specific quality. Without getting too deep into it, they're using dye-sublimation processes that make your photos look super glossy. Folks like the look, and if that's your jam, then you should consider how to make those glossy print photos look their absolute best.

I often say that bokeh and fast apertures aren't really all that special these days. And in many ways, I still think that this is a true statement. But where I think that it's different is with telephoto focal lengths. Specifically, I think that long telephoto lenses that can deliver images that look and feel like they were made with medium format cameras instead are truly something to behold. And for that reason, I think that it's way past time that the 105mm f1.4 lens makes its return.

This has been a very long time in the making, and I'm very excited to finally make this happen. The Phoblographer is launching workshops for photographers who want to find ways to grow beyond just what all the social media content developers and YouTubers tell you you need. And we're doing this in a very special way that so many others don't do. More importantly, we're doing this at an extremely affordable price point at a secret location in New York City.

Camp Snap 2 Review: They Did the Right Thing

Camp Snap 2 Review: They Did the Right Thing

by Chris Gampat

It brings me immense joy to know that Camp Snap has been so successful with what they've built that the brand has a new iteration of the camera that made them famous. Years ago, I was one of the first journalists to review the original Camp Snap and hop onto the idea that cameras should be fun again. Now, everyone is doing it. And with the Camp Snap 2, things got a bit more serious -- and that's a word that I'm still exploring. The camera still isn't all that serious at all. But if anything, it just feels more premium. And ultimately, they stayed true to who they are while actually fixing the problems people complained about: unlike a whole slew of other companies.
