When I first got into photography, my photojournalism professor always taught me to never use flash. Why? Honestly, I'm still not sure. But I had good mentors when I worked at B&H Photo over a decade ago. They completely changed my understanding of why you'd use a flash. For years, people taught me that you only use a flash when you don't have enough light. But the truth is that you use a flash when you want to add creativity to your images. It's part of why I started the Creating the Photograph series here on the Phoblographer. To this day, it still is one of photography's greatest magic tricks in that it creates something that the human eye can't see in a matter of split seconds. And so over the past 10 years, I've changed as a photographer. And how I light has also changed.

In 2025, I started to do things that otherwise would seem crazy for a publisher of a niche photography online magazine to do. For starters, this year, the Phoblographer may actually make a printed magazine again. But in addition to that, we didn't sell any ads to the big camera manufacturers. It really showed me that if everyone even gave $1 to read FOR THE YEAR, we'd make enough money to be able to grow and sustain the site for a very, very long time. But that's really tough to ask. Eventually, I'd like to site to move away from needing and relying on banner-ads. Instead, I want the site to go fully super-affordable subscription eventually.

I Don’t Miss the DSLR

Several years ago, I couldn't wait for the industry to move away from DSLRs. I remember it very clearly. The time was when everyone was saying that mirrorless cameras were going to be the future. And I, who was going legally blind, was all for this. The autofocus was better, I could see the scene so much better than through the awful optical viewfinders, and the cameras were light. On top of that, Canon wasn't even bothering to innovate in many of the same ways that they're not doing anything for photographers today. To me, the entire system needed to be burned down.
