The Viltrox 85mm F2 EVO FE is a Lens Looking for Its Lane

By Alberto Lima

October 20, 2025

For a long time, we haven’t reviewed Viltrox’s cheaper lenses. Why? Well, to reiterate what Managing Editor Nilofer Khan said to me just now in a meeting, “All these lenses and cameras are the same.” And at the lower end, that’s exactly the case. So when the Viltrox 85mm f2 EVO FE was unveiled to me, I was quite confused. Why would I buy this thing over the Sony 85mm f1.8? The Sony 85mm f1.8 is still purchased even over the Sony 85mm f1.4 G Master II. Plus, it’s got a bit of weather resistance, is fast to focus, and lets in a minute amount more light. It’s also still not all that large at all. Overall, it’s small enough that I wouldn’t mind bringing it around with me all day and that it fits easily into a small camera bag designed for mirrorless camera bodies. So why did Viltrox make this lens?

Is the Canon G1x Mk III a Good Camera in 2025?

By Chris Gampat

October 20, 2025

If you've been reading this site for a while, you probably know the answer to this question. Is the Canon G1x Mk III really a good camera still in 2025? Admittedly, I've barely taken mine out of the bag this year -- but that has more to do with the bitter taste that Canon products have currently left in my mouth. Undoubtedly, I think it's one of the best point-and-shoot cameras still on the market. Further to that point, genuinely and truly, the Canon G1x Mk III really still is one of the best cameras for street photography in my mind. That's because of the APS-C sensor, weather resistanec, ability to load up film styles, and the ability to do things like zone focusing.

I Shot at F8 For a Month, Here’s What I Learned About Photography

By Nilofer Khan

October 20, 2025

We've all heard the expression "f8, and be there." This quote is popularly attributed to Arthur Fellig (famously known as Weegee), who captured some of the most striking photojournalistic images of his time. But it wasn't just Weegee who liked a good depth of field and sharp details. However, as today's photography practices are about breaking the rules, we decided to get in touch with our roots, to see how this practice fares today. Here's a look at the things I learned about photography.

Hey pros! Listen up! Our photography insurance program is designed to be there when photographers really need it! We’re giving you more than the competition can in different ways! The Best Sony 35mm f1.4 is From a Decade Ago

By Chris Gampat

October 19, 2025

When I look back into Phoblographer's archives for 35mm f1.4 lenses for Sony, I run into four specific lenses. There's the Sony G Master, which is beautiful in its own right. There's also the much older 35mm f1.4 Minolta port that's got a very classic look to it. And the Pergear 35mm f1.4 is still probably one of my favorite lenses for Sony E mount. But the one that really has my heart is a lens that I reviewed back in 2015 -- the Sony Zeiss 35mm f1.4. To this day, there isn't a 35mm lens that I remember as vividly as this one. This lens is perhaps one of my very favorite 35mm f1.4 lenses that I've ever tested.

Nikon Made One of Their Best Lenses Nearly a Decade Ago

By Chris Gampat

October 18, 2025

Back in 2017, I reviewed the Nikon 28mm f1.4 E G lens for Nikon F mount cameras. Every now and again, I look up prices on that lens only to realize that it's still very expensive. Why? Well, honestly; it's one of the few lenses I would've considered going back to DSLRs for. Something overall better about the image quality and how easy it is to fall in love with it has never really been replicated. I even own the Leica 28mm f2 SL APO lens, and even that hasn't excited me like the older Nikon lens.
