Nikon Lost 86 Billion Yen. Can it Survive?
by Nilofer Khan
June 1, 2026
Nikon has recently seen a loss of 86 billion yen as of March 2026. Considered to be the worst annual year for the company in its history, the total operating profit has been a negative 112.4 billion yen. These numbers have been alarming, and it has lead the company to think of a new solution. Per a new report, the company is focusing on these two things to make it back.

Could This Camera Trend Bring Back the CCD Sensor?
by Nilofer Khan

When it comes to choosing cameras, there are a handful of models that do better than others. For instance, older Sony or Canon full frame cameras have retained their value quite well over the years. Young photographers have often looked at such models as their next best purchasing bet, but there are some who prefer fixed lens offerings under a certain price tag. The latter has resulted in a demand for compact cameras, which seems to be reaching an all-new high. Here's what the new data reveals

How I Realized That Kodachrome Wasn’t All That Special
by Chris Gampat
June 1, 2026
Part of being one of the last remaining long-time journalists in the photography-space to report on both the tech and arts side is seeing how both have changed. In the early 2010s, I remember how photographers everywhere were saying goodbye to Kodachrome. An article we published in 2013 states that the film was introduced in 1935. So that means that the film is nearly 100 years old -- or what remains of it is at least. But most of it has been long gone. And when Scott Tucker came out with his own film simulation for Nikon's latest cameras, I had to try it.

The Photographer That No One Should Copy
by Chris Gampat
June 1, 2026
I bought The Unseen Saul Leiter during my yearly vacation last year after hanging out in Dashwood Books and hearing another photographer speak so enthusiastically about the photographer. I've known about Saul for years, but he wasn't one that I spent time studying in college. Photographer Saul Leiter is quite a fascinating one. Lots of his most famous work came out at a time when color was something still relatively new and exciting. If it weren't for him, photographers like William Eggleston probably wouldn't have been able to make their own legacy as easily. As a man who is usually captivated by photography books more so than looking at the images online, this experience was akin to something deeply uncomfortable. And it took me a little while to realize why.

Why Getting More Likes Is Killing Your Photography Career
by Chris Gampat
May 31, 2026
Yes, it's true. More likes aren't all that great for you. Social media algorithms are rigged against photographers. Video gets pushed, photos get buried even when your single image has more soul than a thousand AI-generated TikToks with the same robotic voice-over. But here's what they don't want you to know: Your photography isn't the problem. The platforms are. And that's why we're offering a special Portfolio Review for Photographers program.

The Simple Math Behind Ad-Free Photography Journalism
by Chris Gampat
May 30, 2026
I started to do things that otherwise would seem crazy for a publisher of a niche photography online magazine to do. For starters, this year, the Phoblographer may actually make a printed magazine again. But in addition to that, we didn't sell any ads to the big camera manufacturers. It really showed me that if everyone even gave $1 to read FOR THE YEAR, we'd make enough money to be able to grow and sustain the site for a very, very long time. But that's really tough to ask. Eventually, I'd like to site to move away from needing and relying on banner-ads. Instead, I want the site to go fully super-affordable subscription eventually.
