How the Reto Pan Revives a Dying Format

By Chris Gampat

September 4, 2025

I think the Reto Pan is a fantastic camera with lots of great reasons for you to want to shoot with it. Finally, I mean, we’ve got a 35mm compact camera that goes between panoramic format and standard format. That’s awesome. When I started this review on June 6th, I was so hyped about this camera. It’s uniquely different in every single way. Other publications have gotten their reviews out as well – but mine; well I took my time with it even though I shot only a single roll of film. And that’s what I realized: I love film, but I’m the type of person who will shoot lots of it and then put off developing for something like a year or so. And this camera is no exception in a world where so many excellent digital cameras give me a look that I’m yearning for with less work.

The Japanese Camera Manufacturers are Scared. And They’re Pretending Like They’re Not

By Chris Gampat

September 4, 2025

I've been saying, perhaps more prominently than other camera reviewers and journalists, that the camera industry needs a shake up. Those who are saying it, have only really been saying it recently. And many of the other publications perhaps won't say it because they don't want to rock the boat. But I don't care. In 2022, I said that the camera manufacturers have to learn from the watch industry about how to adapt to the world post-smartphone. But they never truly adapted. Instead, their products lost their soul and they tried to say that they were innovative. In truth, there haven't been many innovations and they're all literally in bed with one another using each others parts. That's why I'm so happy about the news that Andrea Pizzini from posted about DJI making a full-frame mirrorless camera.

The Nikon Zf Comes in Silver and Adds Film Grain

By Chris Gampat

September 4, 2025

Today, many photographers are getting what they asked for: the Nikon Zf in silver. We reviewed the camera in 2023 and found it to be really one of the best Nikon cameras out there. Everyone wanted a silver edition, and now it's here. Additionally, Nikon is giving the camera the ability to add film grain to the look. I really do wonder now, though: does this mean that we're at the end of the lifespan of the Nikon Zf and that's why they're doing this special variant?

Is the Canon 5Ds a Good Camera in 2025?

By Chris Gampat

September 3, 2025

10 years ago, I wrote a comparison between high megapixel camera bodies and ultimately stated that the Canon 5Ds is one of the best that you can get your hands on. To my surprise, a friend of mine last year who is a VFX artist bought one simply because of the mount's adaptability and the high megapixel count. On top of that, the camera is pretty affordable these days. In fact, Canon still hasn't made another 50MP camera body. But even though it's a DSLR, is it still a good camera today even though it's around a decade old?

Canon cameras have had been quite popular, and the Canon R7 is one such model. An APS-C device, the R7 is an all round performer, and it can be used photographers shooting portraits, wildlife, or still life. While the camera has some exceptional capabilities, it still is three years old, with the questions of Canon R7 II surfacing. Per new reports, the company is reworking some parts of its successors, such as the LCD. Here is a look.

The Best Small Lens for the Panasonic LUMIX S9

By Chris Gampat

September 3, 2025

One of Panasonic's coolest cameras is the LUMIX S9. But there aren't many lenses out there that make the package seem very small. Sure, Sigma has a few contemporary primes, and LUMIX also has its 18-40mm zoom. But perhaps the single best small lens is the Bright Star 28mm f2.8 adapted to the camera body. Not only does it make the entire package so small and portable, but it's also basically a budget Leica setup.

A New Lens From Nikon Could Be What Sports Pros Want

By Feroz Khan

September 3, 2025

Nikon's Z-mount lens lineup is solid, but it could be better in some genres. You've got the big beasts like the Nikon Z 600mm f4 and 400mm f2.8. Then the a bit more portable 400mm f4.5 and the compact 600mm f6.3. Add the 70-200mm f2.8 to the mix, and things look pretty strong. But if you've shot a basketball game, a rugby scrum, or a horse race, you know there's a gap right in the middle. That's exactly where a 120-300mm f2.8 zoom would really shine.
